Homework 2
Hickories and Maples of Lansing Woods

This homework assignment is composed of two parts:

  1. Perform a mapped point pattern analysis of the hickory and maple Lansing Woods data sets (SAS data steps below). Summarize your findings about the spatial pattern of each species in a short report. I suggest that you include a few of the more important graphics (important to supporting your inferences) in your report.
  2. A simple random sample of 25 quadrats of size 0.05 x 0.05 were taken from the possible 400 quadrats in the Lansing Woods data set and the numbers of hickories and maples were counted on each of the sampled quadrats. Perform an analysis of these counts to determine if the occurrence of hickories and maples on plots is independent. What other analyses might you do to investigate the spatial relationships between these two species? Would you have taken a simple random sample or some other type of sample? Explain why. Again, summarize your findings in a short report, providing graphics to support your findings as necessary.
