SAS 9.2

SAS 9.2 is now available. We have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Windows and Linux. You must have 5 GB of RAM or more to run the 64-bit Windows version of SAS and have features like importing Excel 2003 files work. If you have 4 GB or less of RAM, install the 32-bit version.

What’s new in SAS 9.2?

Unless you need some of the new procedures and/or features in SAS 9.2, you probably will want to stay with SAS 9.1.3. SAS 9.2 takes a lot of hard drive space and the installation process takes between one and two hours. Distribution is on three DVDs and you shuffle them several times.

SAS or JMP for Faculty/Staff Use

SAS and JMP are available for use by LSU faculty and staff members. Licenses are paid for annually, and the cost is $100 for the first license (SAS and JMP are considered separate products, so this is per product) in a department, station, or organization, and $60 for each additional license. (Note: this fee is subject to change without notice because SAS does increase the fee we pay.) The SAS license year runs from March 14 through March 13, but SAS will continue to function for 90 days after it expires, or until mid-June. The JMP license year runs from April 30 through April 29.

The fee is not prorated. Billing for SAS is done in late October or early November for the current license year. Billing for JMP is done in January for the current license year. Departments will be billed for all their SAS licenses at one time and all their JMP licenses a little later.

Any copy of SAS or JMP installed in an LSU computer must be paid for at the faculty/staff rate, even if the computer is used by students. Students cannot pay for SAS or JMP at the student rate and install it on an LSU computer.

Faculty and staff who install SAS or JMP on their LSU computer may also install it on their personal computer at home for no additional fee.

SAS or JMP for Student Use

Virtual Lab (SAS only)

Students can run both SAS and Enterprise Guide by logging in to Virtual Lab at vlab.lsu.edu. You can open or save files to your local computer. Your local drive C is mapped as drive Z and other local drives are given letters at the end of the alphabet. In any drop-down File box, you will see your local drives listed in this format: Drive C for your-PAWS-ID (Z:), Drive D for your-PAWS-ID (Y:), etc.

If you don’t need to run SAS often and you have a fast, reliable internet connection, this may be the better option for you.

Your home or portable computer

If you need to use SAS often, you have a slow or unreliable internet connection, or you travel, you may prefer to install SAS on your own computer rather than running it through Virtual Lab. JMP is not available through Virtual Lab, so students wanting to run JMP need to install it on their own computers.

SAS will not run under any Windows Home version. If you are running a Home version of Windows, download Windows 7 Enterprise from TigerWare and install it if you want to run SAS. SAS 9.1.3 will not run under the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. There is a 64-bit version of SAS 9.2.

LSU students can obtain copies of SAS or JMP for their personal use on their computer at home, either for doing class work or for analyzing their research data. Students are licensed to use SAS or JMP only as long as they are a student at LSU.

Cost is $25 per year for all or part of a license year; the cost is not prorated. Our SAS license year runs from March 15 through March 14, but SAS will continue to function through mid-June. Our JMP license year runs from April 30 through April 29. If you wish to continue using SAS or JMP after it is due to expire, you must pay an additional $25 per license year. Payments are applied to the license year beginning in the year the check was written. For example, a check written any time in 2009 is applied toward the 2009-2010 license year. The $25 is a license fee; you have paid for permission to use SAS or JMP. You have not paid for a CD set and you have not paid for any documentation.

Students cannot pay for a student license to install SAS or JMP on an LSU computer. Copies of SAS or JMP installed on LSU computers must be paid for by the department at the faculty/staff price.
